You’ve finished your essay and proofread it 100 times for grammatical errors. Your essay talks about your passion and the type of person who are. You’ve even taken out some of the “fluff” so it fits the word requirement perfectly. However, something is missing and you can’t quite put your finger on it.
Here at SalmonEdit, we believe that showing your personality is essential to a successful essay. Especially since many schools are cutting out the interview from the application process, the essay is becoming one of the only places to show your personality.
To make sure your personality shines through, you first need to know your own personality. Are you funny? Clever? Serious? Witty? Show it! Remember that these essays are different from most that you will write in high school. Most of the time you are telling a story, so if there is a small piece of self-deprecating humor you would add if you were speaking to your friends, then put it in!
As cliché as it sounds, be yourself. This process is about finding the best fit for you rather than the school ranked the 1st by US News and World Report. Don’t try to be someone that you aren’t just because you think the college might like it. And in the end, remember that the essay is not only what you say, but also how you say it!
